bbc wildlife magazine July podcast

bored as hell again so I decided to download a bunch of podcasts from the BBC Wildlife Magazine website.

I didnt get a chance to listen to all of them but i did listen to 2 i guess. Anyway they have this fun little feature at the end of the show where they debate between which of 2 creatures is better. In the July podcast the war was between the dolphin and the octopus.

The guy who was rooting for the octopus won(no surprise)

Its too easy. Dolphins may seem fun,enthusiastic,clever and happy go lucky but thats where it ends. for me atleast. Octopuses are way more eccentric and magnificent creatures.

The guy mentioned everything the octopus has going on for itself, except probably that the ink they secrete is actually toxic to the octopus itself. Anyway some cool pics of the beautiful beast below…Enjoy

tomato seedling obsessions of yore!

 

i remember when i was in the fifth grade i loved Biology. I still do but not with the same eagerness and enthusiasm as back then. Well that year we were studying about plant reproduction and i remember how i actually went to all the trouble of actually looking up stuff on the Net about plant classes and phylum and stuff i hardly remember now. I also remember this one time I lined up almost 10 juice cartons and filled them with potting soil that i stole from one of our neighbours(what the hell it was lying around for ages) and had a small tomato plantation. The first few days I was a bit bummed but then when they started to sprout I was over the moon. I would check up on them like every 5 minutes to see if any of the seedlings had grown in any new directions. The point of this post is that I can hardly be bothered by that kind of stuff now. Its almost like socially unacceptable for a 20 yr old guy to be in a room with potting soil. So Ive given myself the opppurtunity to experience that joy for lack of a better word again.  Ive just planted some tomato seeds and they should be sprouting in a few days so until then…

pelican eats pigeon! seriously now

Families and tourists in a London park were left shocked when a pelican picked up and swallowed a pigeon.

 

The unusual wildlife spectacle in St James’s Park was caught on camera by photographer Cathal McNaughton.

He said the Eastern White pelican had the unfortunate pigeon in its beak for more than 20 minutes before swallowing it whole.

An RSPB spokesman said: “It is almost unheard of for a pelican to eat a bird. Their diet should be strictly fish.”

Mr McNaughton, from the Press Association, said: “The pelican was on the towpath preening itself, and there were a lot of tourists watching it.

“Then the bird got up and strolled along until it reached one of the pigeons, which it just grabbed in its beak.

There was a bit of a struggle for about 20 minutes, with all these people watching. The pelican only opened its mouth a couple of times.

“Then it managed to get the pigeon to go head first down its throat. It was kicking and flapping the whole way down.”

There are currently five pelicans living near Duck Island in St James’s Park – four Eastern Whites and one Louisiana Brown.

Pelicans were introduced into the park during King Charles II’s reign as a gift from the Russian ambassador.
